What Is Dermaplaning?
It may sound like it, but there is nothing sweet about peach fuzz. The little wisps, otherwise known as vellus hair, cover our face and cause more problems than you might otherwise think. Over time, these fine hairs trap oil, dirt, makeup and other debris, causing your skin to lose its glow and breakouts to occur.
With dermaplaning, you can kiss your peach fuzz goodbye! At DayDreams Day & Med Spa, our estheticians use sterile, medical-grade surgical blades and featherlike strokes to shave the top layer of the epidermis. These delicate strokes wipe away anything trapped on your face that a cleansing cannot, ridding the face of peach fuzz, dead skin cells, and the debris that has been trapped on the surface of your skin. End result; you’ll have healthier and smoother skin.
Dermaplaning is a painless and simple treatment that exfoliates the skin without the use of chemicals. If you’ve ever had a chemical peel or microdermabrasion, then you’ve experienced how amazing the skin feels after its top layer has been exfoliated. Those treatments are not an option, though, for those who are pregnant, nursing or have extremely sensitive skin. This leaves dermaplaning as the perfect option for someone who wants smoother, healthier skin but cannot achieve it through other exfoliating means.
A common misconception is that there is little to no difference between dermaplaning and shaving your face or legs. Will any hair removed grow back stubbly, dark or thicker? The answer is no. Shaving with a razor removes normal hair, not vellus hair (peach fuzz). The texture of normal hair differs from vellus hair, which is why it grows back stubbly and quickly after use of a razor.
During a dermaplaning treatment, our licensed estheticians use medical-grade surgical blades that specifically remove peach fuzz. When your vellus hair does in fact grow back, it may appear darker than before. But, that is an effect visible only because your complexion has since been brightened with the removal of the dead skin and other residues.
Another common misconception is that dermaplaning will cause breakouts. The truth is quite the opposite. Dermaplaning exfoliates, which helps keep the skin clear of factors that might cause breakouts. Without the peach fuzz, dead skin cells, and other debris in the way, your facial cleansers, toners, serums and other products can now better penetrate the epidermis.
To keep peach fuzz at bay, it’s best to schedule dermaplaning about once a month. Pure magic happens, though, when you combine dermaplaning and chemical peels. At our Brandon and Lakeland locations, we offer a double exfoliation treatment known as the Dermapeel that starts with a manual exfoliation via dermaplaning followed up with a chemical exfoliation using a hydrating peel. The peel consists of pure, natural lactic acid, that will penetrate deeper into the skin than it otherwise would thanks to the delicate work from the dermaplaning. The end result is lighter, tighter, firmer, and clearer skin.
